4th National EMDR Pakistan Conference
The 4th National EMDR Pakistan Conference was held on 17th September 2023 at the EMDR Headquarters in Westridge, Rawalpindi. This annual gathering brought together EMDR practitioners, researchers, and mental health professionals from across the country, reaffirming the Association’s commitment to advancing trauma-focused care and strengthening the EMDR community in Pakistan.
A highlight of the scientific program was an insightful talk by Dr. Saleem Tareen, an international EMDR expert from Ireland, on the application of EMDR therapy in treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). His session provided practical frameworks for integrating EMDR into clinical practice with OCD, a condition that is often difficult to treat with conventional approaches.
The conference also featured a scientific presentations competition to encourage research in EMDR which was judged by a panel of experts. In order to support and promote local EMDR practitioners, the Patron of EMDR Pakistan, Prof. Mowaddat Hussain Rana, personally funded a research grant award for the top 3 paper presentations at the conference. In addition, EMDR Pakistan covered the registration fees for the upcoming EMDR International Conference in Cambodia (December 2023) for all local researchers whose studies were accepted for presentation, thus ensuring that their valuable contributions were represented at the global stage.
The event also marked an important transition in leadership. Prof. Mowaddat Hussain Rana, Patron of EMDR Pakistan, administered the oath of office to the new President, Dr. Sawera Mansoor. In her Presidential Address, Dr. Mansoor outlined a dynamic vision for the future of EMDR Pakistan. Her goals include expanding capacity building through new trainings and refresher courses, especially in underserved areas; establishing a trauma response network to mobilize timely psychological support for communities affected by disasters; and building a strong foundation of local research and international representation. She emphasized the responsibility of EMDR practitioners to light the way for healing in Pakistan, highlighting the transformative power of EMDR therapy in fostering resilience and recovery.
The conference also served as a farewell to the outgoing President, Dr. Khadija Tahir, who in her address reflected on the journey of EMDR Pakistan under her leadership. She mentioned the extensive trainings conducted across the country that significantly increased the number of EMDR therapists, laying a strong foundation for growth. Her tireless efforts in developing trainers, consultants, and practitioners were deeply acknowledged and celebrated.
The 4th National Conference of EMDR Pakistan not only showcased scientific and clinical advancements, but also reaffirmed the Association’s mission of service, healing, and research. With strong leadership, dedicated professionals, and international collaborations, EMDR Pakistan continues to grow as a vibrant community committed to alleviating psychotrauma across the nation and beyond.
